The short version
What it does
Sold for skin: firmer texture, fewer wrinkles, faster wound healing, and for hair growth. It is in a lot of mainstream skincare.
How it does it
A tiny peptide that binds copper and carries it into skin. Copper is needed to build collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its structure, so the idea is that delivering it where it is wanted supports repair.
The catch
On your face as a cosmetic it is unremarkable and legal. Injected, it becomes an unlicensed medicine, and injecting a copper compound is not the same risk as rubbing it on. The vendors selling 50mg vials are not selling you a face cream.

GHK-Cu is the only compound in this register you can buy legally on a high street, in a cream, with no eyebrows raised. It is also sold in 50mg vials for injection, which is a completely different proposition, and the gap between those two things is the whole point of this record.

01What it is
GHK is a tripeptide, glycine-histidine-lysine, found naturally in human blood plasma. It binds copper ions with high affinity, and the copper complex is what is meant by GHK-Cu.
Copper is genuinely required for the enzymes that cross-link collagen and elastin, the structural proteins in skin. The proposition is that GHK acts as a delivery vehicle, carrying copper to where those enzymes need it, and that it also influences the expression of genes involved in tissue repair.
Topical GHK-Cu in a serum or cream is a cosmetic ingredient. Legal, regulated as a cosmetic rather than a medicine, and reasonably well established in the skincare literature.
Injectable GHK-Cu sold as a research chemical is an unlicensed medicine. Different route, different systemic exposure, different risk, no regulatory oversight of any kind.
02How it came about
GHK was identified in human plasma in the 1970s, in work on how blood plasma influenced liver tissue in culture. Interest in the copper complex for wound healing and skin repair followed, and it became established as a cosmetic ingredient over the following decades.
Its move into injectable grey-market selling is much more recent and rides on the general growth of peptide retail rather than on any new evidence.
03UK legal and licensing status
The regulatory position genuinely depends on the route, which is unusual in this register.
Lawful in the UK as a cosmetic ingredient. Cosmetics are regulated for safety, not for efficacy, which means a legal cream is not the same as a proven one. Claims must not stray into medicinal territory, which is why reputable brands talk about appearance rather than healing.

04How it works
Proposed mechanisms, largely from laboratory and animal work, include copper delivery for collagen and elastin cross-linking, antioxidant activity, and effects on the expression of genes involved in tissue remodelling. Some work reports effects on hair follicles, which is where the hair growth claims come from.
None of that mechanism translates straightforwardly from a cream to an injection. Systemic exposure to a copper complex is a different pharmacological situation from local application, and the safety questions differ accordingly.
05What it is not
Claims that attach themselves to this compound and do not hold up.
- Not a medicine in a cosmetic. Cosmetics are regulated for safety, not efficacy. Legal does not mean proven.
- Not the same product injected. A cosmetic ingredient does not carry its regulatory status with it into a syringe.
- Not free of a copper question. Copper is essential in small amounts and toxic in excess. That distinction matters far more systemically than topically.
- Not established for hair loss. There are licensed treatments for pattern hair loss with real evidence. This is not one of them.
06What the evidence shows
For topical use the picture is better than most of this register. There are human studies on skin appearance, wrinkle depth and skin firmness, and a broader laboratory literature on wound healing and gene expression. It is a reasonable cosmetic ingredient with a plausible mechanism.
Studies of a cream tell you about a cream. There is no meaningful human trial evidence for injected GHK-Cu, for any indication. Marketing for injectable product routinely cites the topical and laboratory literature, which is the same substitution trick that TB-500 sellers use with thymosin beta-4 research.
Everything about injected use: absorption, distribution, systemic copper load, and safety over any period. Also whether the cosmetic effects are large enough to matter to anyone, since cosmetic regulation does not require proving that.
07Reported harms
Topically it is generally well tolerated, with irritation and contact sensitivity reported occasionally. Copper compounds can stain fabric and, in some products, skin.
For injection there is no safety profile at all, because nobody has established one. The specific theoretical concern is systemic copper load: copper is essential in trace amounts and toxic in excess, and injecting a copper complex bypasses the gut absorption controls that normally regulate how much gets in. Anyone with a copper metabolism disorder such as Wilson's disease should treat this as a hard no rather than a caution.
08Interactions and cautions
No interaction data for injected use. Zinc and copper compete for absorption, which is well established nutritionally, and high-dose zinc supplementation alongside a copper compound is a genuine unknown rather than a theoretical one.
09Stopping
Topically, cosmetic effects on skin appearance fade as normal turnover continues. Nothing else is documented.
10Monitoring
Nothing for cosmetic use, reasonably enough. For injected use, if anyone were " monitoring sensibly, serum copper and caeruloplasmin would be the markers, which is not something any vendor mentions.
