The short version
What it does
Sold for anti-ageing, longevity, better sleep and general cellular health. It is the best-known name in longevity peptide circles.
How it does it
Your chromosomes have protective caps that shorten as you age. This is claimed to switch back on the enzyme that rebuilds those caps, in theory slowing part of how ageing works.
The catch
Longer caps are also associated with a higher cancer risk, and the FDA said the available studies were far too short and narrow to say anything about that. Nearly all the longevity evidence comes from one research group.

Epitalon is the compound longevity culture is built on, and the honest read on it involves a trade nobody selling it mentions: the mechanism that is supposed to slow ageing is the same mechanism cancer cells use to become immortal.
01What it is
Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide, alanine-glutamate-aspartate-glycine, based on a substance extracted from the pineal gland called epithalamin.
The proposition rests on telomeres, the repeated sequences that cap the ends of your chromosomes. They shorten each time a cell divides, and when they get short enough the cell stops dividing. That is one of the recognised mechanisms of ageing. Telomerase is the enzyme that rebuilds them, and it is largely switched off in adult cells. Epitalon is claimed to switch it back on.
02How it came about
Work on epithalamin and then epitalon was carried out largely by one research group in St Petersburg from the 1970s onwards, including cohort studies in older adults reporting effects on mortality and on age-related markers.
Epitalon received an orphan drug designation from the FDA for retinitis pigmentosa in 2010, which was later withdrawn. It came before the compounding advisory committee in July 2026 nominated for healthy ageing, and passed.
03UK legal and licensing status
No MHRA authorisation, and no approval from the FDA or EMA. Supplying it for human use in the UK without authorisation is prohibited. The withdrawn 2010 orphan designation was a designation, not an approval, and did not lead to one.
04How it works
The proposed mechanism is activation of telomerase, rebuilding telomeres and extending how many times a cell can divide. Effects on melatonin and circadian rhythm have also been reported, which is where the sleep claims come from.
Telomerase reactivation is not straightforwardly good. It is one of the things cancer cells do to escape the limit on how often they can divide. The FDA noted directly that longer telomeres are also associated with increased cancer risk, and that the available studies were far too short and narrow in scope to characterise epitalon's carcinogenic potential.
That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to want long trials before taking something for years, which is precisely what does not exist.
05What it is not
Claims that attach themselves to this compound and do not hold up.
- Not a proven longevity treatment. The evidence is cohort work from a single research group, not modern controlled trials.
- Not an approved medicine anywhere. The 2010 orphan designation was withdrawn and never became an approval.
- Not free of a cancer question. The mechanism it is sold on is one cancer cells use, and nobody has studied it long enough to know what that means in practice.
06What the evidence shows
The human evidence is cohort studies in older adults, reported over decades, largely from one group in St Petersburg. Findings included effects on mortality and on age-related markers.
Independent replication is how science protects itself from error, bias and enthusiasm. When almost all the positive findings for a compound come from the group that developed it, that is not evidence of dishonesty, but it is a structural weakness that no amount of repetition within the same group fixes. Ask whether anyone else has found the same thing.
The FDA's July 2026 review found the available studies insufficient, and specifically flagged the inability to assess carcinogenic potential.
Cancer risk over years, which is the single most important unknown given the mechanism. Also independent replication, modern controlled trial data, and any established dose or duration.
07Reported harms
No regulated frequency table. Reported tolerability in the cohort literature is good, from a source that is not independent.
The specific unquantified risk is carcinogenicity, which the FDA said the studies were too short and narrow to characterise. Standard unregulated supply risks apply on top.
08Interactions and cautions
No data. Reported effects on melatonin mean anyone taking sleep medication or melatonin is combining two things acting on the same system with no guidance.

10Monitoring
Nothing formal, and nothing that would detect the risk that actually matters here. Routine bloods do not screen for the consequences of telomerase activation.
