A fourth oral GLP-1 reported phase 2b results, this time in type 2 diabetes
Results from SOLSTICE, a multicentre phase 2b randomised placebo-controlled trial of elecoglipron, an oral small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, were published in The Lancet and presented at the American Diabetes Association's Scientific Sessions. The trial was in adults with type 2 diabetes and reported effects on both blood glucose control and body weight.
What this actually means
The individual result matters less than the count. This is the fourth oral small-molecule GLP-1 to report solid mid-stage or late-stage data, after orforglipron's US approval, aleniglipron and CX11.
Four independent programmes reaching this stage within months of each other tells you the hard chemistry problem has been solved by more than one group. Small molecules can be swallowed, made in bulk and stored without refrigeration, which is the actual bottleneck on getting these drugs to people worldwide.
So the read is not that a new wonder drug is arriving. It is that the cost and supply picture for this entire class looks different in five years than it does now, and that matters more for access than any single trial result.
