The short answer
They are the same drug. Both are semaglutide, made by the same company. There is no chemical difference in the active ingredient.
What differs is the licence, and that is not a technicality. Ozempic is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is licensed for weight management. Same molecule, different approved use, different dose range, different brand.

02What is the same
- The active ingredient. Semaglutide in both.
- The mechanism. Identical. Reduced appetite, slowed gastric emptying, glucose-dependent insulin release.
- Weekly injection under the skin for both.
- Prescription only, both.
- The side effect profile, broadly, since it is the same drug acting the same way.

The dose difference is the practical one. Wegovy goes to a higher maximum than Ozempic, because the weight-management trials used higher doses than the diabetes trials. So they are not interchangeable pen for pen even though the drug inside is the same.
During the shortages from 2022 onwards, Ozempic was widely prescribed off-label for weight loss, and people with type 2 diabetes struggled to get the medicine they depended on. That is the practical reason the distinction is taken seriously, and why asking for Ozempic for weight loss is the wrong request even when the underlying drug is right.
04What the evidence says
Different trial programmes, same drug. The diabetes licence rests on the SUSTAIN programme, and the weight-management licence on STEP. Both were funded by Novo Nordisk.
SELECT is worth knowing about separately: it examined cardiovascular outcomes in people with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease but without diabetes, and reported reduced cardiovascular events. That is part of why semaglutide is increasingly discussed as a metabolic medicine rather than purely a weight or glucose one.
05Which suits whom
This one is genuinely simple, which is rare.
- If you have type 2 diabetes, Ozempic is the licensed product for that.
- If you are seeking treatment for weight, Wegovy is the licensed product for that, subject to the BMI-based eligibility criteria.
- If both apply, that is exactly the conversation to have with your prescriber, because the answer depends on your glucose control, your other medicines and what is funded.
06Getting either in the UK
Ozempic is available on NHS prescription for type 2 diabetes subject to clinical criteria. Wegovy for weight management runs through NICE criteria and local commissioning, and access is more restricted. Both are available privately through registered UK pharmacies against a valid prescription.
Since July 2026 there is also an oral semaglutide tablet licensed for weight management, which is private-only. That is a third product containing the same drug, so if you are already confused by two brand names, know that there are now more.
07The honest bottom line
Same drug. Different licence, different dose, different name. Neither is better than the other, because the question does not really make sense once you know they are the same molecule.
The right question is which licence fits what you are being treated for, and that is a prescriber's call rather than a preference.

Is Ozempic the same as Wegovy?
The active ingredient is identical, semaglutide, from the same manufacturer. They are licensed for different things and at different dose ranges, so they are the same drug sold as two products, not two interchangeable products.
Can I get Ozempic for weight loss?
That would be off-label, because its UK licence covers type 2 diabetes. Licensed weight-management options exist, including Wegovy, which makes asking for Ozempic instead an odd request and one that contributed to shortages for people with diabetes.
